Just about everyday someone on a forum asks the same question, “Should I go after this keyword?” or “How do I know what keyword to go after?”. Local keyword marketing seems to very confusing for most. Heck.. even I had a huge challenge with this for quite some time in the beginning of both my offline marketing business and before that when I was marketing my own books and audios using online marketing tactics.

Here is a short answer I just gave on a forum that should help. I plan on making a few videos to really dive into this topic.

I dont even use short term kw for my clients anymore. Too competitive and triggers Google Places all over the page.

I get in the mindset of the consumer that is searching for help or a service. Its like when my ipod stopped working. I didnt search “ipod repair”. because that just gave me a bunch of sites trying to sell me stuff. I searched for the problem I was having “ipod 5th generation only playing audio one side”. This gave me sites that had either videos or explanations on what was wrong and how to fix it. Only a handful of ipod repair shops had this answer and I ordered from one that did answer my question.

So if you are working with a plumber it would be better to rank for search phrases like “toilet wont stop running” or something like that? I dont know toilet problems or plumbing problems, but your client does.

Their are some great tools to help you with finding what local consumers are searching for. The best one I have found to date is using Google suggestion bar. By typing in the search bar, Google will give you suggestions on what others are searching for in list of popularity. This is very powerful since Googles own keyword tool and that includes tools such as Market Samurai, Micro Niche Finder, and Traffic Travis wont give you these results.

You can buy automated tools like Keyword Ninja (works with both Mac and Windows) and you can get at 50% off ($22) here.

The Keyword Ninja Tool is a script and requires that you install it on your own hosting. Here is one that runs on your desktop but only works with Windows called Keyword Fighter for around $19 here.

Both Keyword Fighter and Keyword Ninja also give you results from not only Google but also sites like Amazon, Youtube, Bing and more. But The Keyword Fighter tool has the Keyword Competition tool that allows you to get the actual results of the competing pages when you plug them into it. Meaning you can take the 100′s of results of the local keywords that the tool provides and just plug them into the Key Comp tool and it will give you the results in just a few seconds all at once. This can also be done in Market Samurai if you own that and dont want to install a script on your server.

Update: Keyword Fighter now has a Keyword competition tool as well. This make it a great tool for those that want a Windows program running from their desktop instead of needing to upload a script to your hosting. Get it here: Keyword Fighter

Here is a video of The Keyword Fighter Tool in action

In this post we will cover all of the following topics like google local search training and google local search question. Also google local search help and google local search guide. We go over google external keyword suggestion tool and also google keyword suggestion tool external.

Hey Dan can you tell me which keyword tool you’re using now? I use to use the one that was the PHP script you installed on your hosting account but it no longer works and I haven’t gotten any support from them. I’m looking for a new one.

    Thanks

Dan, have you ever used SECockpit? I’ve been using it for a while, and though a bit expensive, I’ve found it does so much of the work for me. I’d love to know your thoughts and expertise on this.

    Thanks

    Markus
